Lunar Eclipse May 2022

While I was visiting La Familia in San Antonio last week for my Dad’s 80th birthday, I got to witness a lunar eclipse.

I went outside about 10 or so, as the eclipse was starting, and as it darkened, I thought I should dig out my camera and try to capture some of the moments. In this picture, the eclipse was not quite total. You can see the bright spot on the upper right of the moon.

As the peak approached, my brother Mike came outside and also watched. I took some more photos, playing with exposure and especially focus. For night shots like this, the camera must be manually focused, which is a little bit tricky for my eyes, and harder in backwash of city lights

After waiting a bit more, and more trial and error, we got decent shots of at peak eclipse

I stayed up later to watch the eclipse fade. In this shot, you can see the moon brighten on the lower portion. A bit later yet, and I grabbed some frames of the moon, half red and half sunlit, but it will take some advanced postprocessing techniques I have not yet learned to assemble a composite.
